Historic school transforms into affordable senior housing and community space with Capitol Engineering Group’s innovative and sustainable MEP solutions.

The Margaret Murray Washington Career High School, located in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington, D.C., is undergoing a transformative redevelopment to become The House of Lebanon, a mixed-use project providing over 90 units of affordable senior housing and 15,000 square feet of community space. Built in 1912 and steeped in African American history, the school is being thoughtfully adapted to preserve its historic character while meeting modern housing and community needs.
Capitol Engineering Group is leading the MEP engineering efforts, integrating energy-efficient HVAC systems, ADA-compliant infrastructure, and advanced fire safety measures. The team’s designs ensure seamless functionality while maintaining the building’s architectural integrity. This $25–30 million project balances sustainable technology with heritage preservation, creating a vibrant space that serves both senior residents and the broader community.
